HÔTEL CONTINENTAL

Bar and caf €€
5/5
1 review

While walking in the medina, you can stop by the Continental Hotel, a cult place in the Tangier of the past. The terrace, one of the prettiest in the city, overlooks the port and the old city. Although the hotel has lost some of its prestige over the years, it has nevertheless retained a lot of charm. The service sometimes drags a bit, but there is a sweet air of nostalgia here. To get there, you have to pass by the port and go up to the medina by the street, or access the medina by the Grand Socco square.

CAFÉ-RESTO CAP SPARTEL

Bar and caf

At the foot of the lighthouse, this café opened 50 years ago and was recently renovated. It was one of the meeting places of writers and artists like Paul Bowles, Henri Matisse, Jean Genet and more recently Mohammed Choukri and Tahar Ben Jelloun. Perched on the cliff, on the edge of the forest, its pleasant terraces breezed by the sea await you. You will be able to take a sweet or salty break (excellent lemon pie and Moroccan pancake) while admiring the tumultuous waters of the Strait of Gibraltar which opens under your eyes. Competitive sunsets.

CHELLAH CLUB

Bar and caf €€

This open-air restaurant-bar is very nice and well frequented. It was moved during the renovation of the corniche and is now located in the garden of the Chellah hotel. Founded in 1982, the Chellah is a mythical place where the whole of Tangier meets, from generation to generation, to have a drink in the beautiful garden by the pool and to nibble on the tapas offered on the menu, which has remained the same for 50 years. The owners are also musicians and play live in the summer on the big stage in a very friendly atmosphere. Highly recommended.

DOMAHANA

Bar and caf

At the bottom of the road that leads to the park of Perdicaris, on the left of the parking, you will find this small gargote, very popular and frequented by the locals. For a few dirhams, they serve grilled meat, chicken, brochettes and bissara, a split pea soup (a northern specialty). You can also come for a hot and sweet mint tea or a good squeezed orange juice. There is no menu, you place your order on the first floor before settling at a table on the terraces overlooking the blue waters of the Strait.

NUMBER ONE

Bar and caf

Located near the Rembrandt Hotel, this bar looks like a slightly old-fashioned bistro and doesn't look like much. But it is an institution in Tangier! The place is very pleasant to discuss and remake the world during hours, on a blues or jazzy music, while nibbling Moroccan tapas around a cold beer or a glass of wine. The Number One is known by all Tangierese who appreciate its warm and friendly atmosphere. On match nights, the atmosphere is overexcited. Very nice service and friendly welcome from Karim, the owner.

Small local café-restaurant, simple and family on the edge of the beautiful beach of Sidi Kacem. Calm and quiet facing the Atlantic Ocean and close to the Ibn Battuta airport. Ideal to have a tea after the beach or to nibble fresh grilled sardines or chicken brochettes for a very low price. Children will enjoy the playgrounds and the large garden while watching the peacocks and chickens roaming free. At sunset, you have a front row seat to watch the sky go up in flames. Very helpful staff.

NOMMOS TANGER

Lounge bar

Right on the marina, this restaurant-bar-lounge boasts an incredible view of the Big Blue. It's the new place to feast your taste buds and party at the same time. The place is highly appreciated for its sophisticated cocktails: Apple Flower, red city, fresh cucumber. Enough to whet the appetite. The menu is inspired by the four corners of the world, from fine cuts of mature meat (Black Angus, Wagyu) to sushi. Open kitchen, live show, live band and DJ. The kind of address where you come for a drink, but stay until closing time!

CAFÉ LE MIRAGE

Bar and caf

Before or after a walk in the Perdicaris park, this address allows you to enjoy a relaxing view of the vegetation from the terrace. The establishment is modern, clean and quiet. Expect a more lively atmosphere on Sundays, a day favored by families to go for a walk. The service is a bit difficult to follow. The best thing to do during the week is to come and have a tea with a wide variety of cakes. You will enjoy a privileged moment far from the hustle and bustle of the city, only a few minutes from the center.

Night-club in its juice with the baroque decoration with its balls with facet, its small dance floor and its circular stools around the tables. One does not come there necessarily for the music whose quality is variable according to the evenings but for its festive environment. Nice cocktails and snacks in case of hunger will be proposed to you. Special evenings, Havana's Club Parties, happy hours on Monday, Gentlemen's nights on Tuesday and the very classic but effective Ladies nights on Wednesday. The party people in search of the early mornings in Tangier will find their account there.

CINE ALCAZAR

Cinema

Inaugurated in 1913, it was first a theater that hosted Spanish troupes and singers. Four years later, the Teatro Alcazar became a cinema that showed silent films with live music by a pianist. With the popularization of talkies, it became one of the most popular movie theaters in the city during the Tangier International period. The last screening took place in 1993. The theater closed its doors and fell into oblivion. It was reborn from its ashes in 2022 after major renovations and brand new equipment.

CAFÉ COLON

In "Tea in the Sahara", Bernardo Bertolucci's film adapted in 1990 from his novel of the same name, Paul Bowles appears in this mythical café, frequented by many Spaniards at the time of the international zone. Ideally located opposite the Alcazar cinema, between Grand Socco and the Kasbah, its terrace is occupied from early morning by strollers who have come to spend a few minutes or a few hours in front of a mint tea or a pressed orange. Inside, the TV broadcasts the Liga matches, which are very popular here, especially when Real and Barça play each other.

TANGIER MOMENTS

Caf philo et littraire

Youness, the owner of this café, is a great lover of literature and culture. A connoisseur of Tangier and Moroccan history, he has chosen to share his knowledge with his customers. Tangier Moments is in fact the first literary café-tea room in the medina. This small address is not easy to find, as it is not necessarily well known by the population. But it still has its regulars. And what a pleasure it is to sip mint tea on the shady terrace, dreaming of the Sahara, with a book by Paul Bowles in hand!
