Shopping centers have opening hours that seem to be an international standard: from 10am to 10pm. In the souks, most stores also open continuously, between 10am and 8pm. Some shopkeepers take a siesta. The break is then between 1pm and 4pm.
You will be able to make good deals at the weavers' souk and especially to make a particular pattern or to choose the colors, if you have something precise in mind. Petit and Grand Socco are full of stores selling handmade carpets. Prices vary according to the materials (wool or cotton), the size and the complexity of the patterns. Payment by credit card is possible in stores selling high-priced items. Otherwise, payment in cash is the rule.
Sales do not exist in small traditional markets. However, in shopping malls, the usual period is 3 months, from the beginning of January to the end of March.
Bargaining is an obligatory step in the small stores of the souk, it is even an art. We talk about money around a tea and especially we take the time. There is no precise rule, except that the final price must be acceptable to both parties. It is advisable to always keep your calm and your smile. There is no need to get upset over a few dirhams.
They will try to sell you "handmade" items that are actually made in large factories producing series. It's hard to tell unless you have a trained eye. The best thing to do is to focus on the fact that you really like the item and the affordability of its price. Also beware of counterfeits, especially concerning sports brands. Many fakes come from China (or elsewhere) and are forbidden on French territory. Customs can seize them when you return to France.
