In upper Ratcha, deep in the green mountains, the second city of the region is situated in a beautiful location and has beautiful 19th century houses. Curiously, it was an important Jewish centre in the Caucasus; until the second half of the 20th century, Jews made up half the population of Oni. The city has an interesting synagogue, one of the three oldest in Georgia, testimony to the curious mountain Jewish communities, which were also found, for example, in Tskhinvali, the capital of South Ossetia. It was built in 1895. The 1991 earthquake damaged it, but it has been rehabilitated
