Ambrolaouri is the capital of the Ratcha-Letchkhumi-Kvemo Svanetia region. The city was severely damaged by the 1991 earthquake. It is a stopover to visit Nikortsminda and Barakoni or the Chaori Lake. This city used to be home to the palaces of the rulers of Amerecia. Not much remains of them, except for a tower known by the inhabitants as the Machabeli Tower. In the 18th century, the city became the fiefdom of a noble family. The history of the city has given rise to numerous archaeological excavations. In 1810, after the conquest of the region by Russia, Imérétie was attached to the Ratcha region.
