3 km from Gitarama, we are here in the Catholic heart of Rwanda. Missionaries were already there in 1906! It then became the seat of the archbishopric, which was moved to the capital Kigali. Located in front of a joyful school, the cathedral of Kabgayi, dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin Mary, is the oldest (1923) in Rwanda. A model of balance, it is guarded by two imposing polychrome statues. The city is also home to a major seminary, a private Catholic university (2002), a school for nurses and midwives, Saint Elizabeth. The town also has a small museum of local crafts.
