It's hard to find another example in Europe of a thousand-year-old fortress built almost on the side of a mountain, offering such an exceptional panorama. Of Muslim origin, it was conquered by Portugal's first king in 1147. Beyond the ramparts, the Palacio de Pena can be seen on the horizon. You can reach the castle and then the Palais de Pena by following a footpath from the center of Sintra to the Palais. The route passes through Villa Sassetti and a Lombard-style belvedere castle (late 19th century), nestled in a sumptuous garden.
