PARK AND PALACE OF MONSERRAT
Large English park and castle in romantic style, with fountains and lawns under the protective shade of vegetation.
Need some peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the historic center? Then head for the heart of Monserrate, a magnificent English-style botanical park dominated by an oriental-style palace. A retreat for writers, Monserrate attracted many foreign visitors, mainly of English origin, who extolled the beauty of the place in travelogues and engravings. Francis Cook, a wealthy 19th-century English industrialist and art collector, fell under the spell of the place, and from this passion was born this masterpiece of Romanticism. Exuberant gardens with exotic species from all over the world, and a palace that is a veritable ode to romantic architecture. As soon as you enter, you're catapulted into a dense jungle that leads to the ruins of an overgrown chapel. Organized into different sections, the garden invites you to discover flora from near and far. Stroll through the Mexican Garden amidst aloes and cacti, the Japanese Garden with its bamboos and camellias, or the superb rose garden with its bewitching fragrances. After this bath in nature, visit the palace, worthy of a tale from the Arabian Nights. Inside, admire the ornaments, carved wooden doors, tiles, vaulted ceilings and indoor fountains. A true architectural gem! The little plus? The site is much less crowded with tourists than Sintra's other monuments. Jackpot!
