PALÁCIO NACIONAL DE SINTRA (OR PAÇO REAL)
Palace in Sintra offering a visit to discover a decorated chapel and a room with a small pool in the center.
One can only be struck by the two immense blast furnaces, first conical, then tubular, which cover the austere face of the palace in white. The central part was built in the 14th century by John I, then the palace was enlarged in the 16th century under Manuel I. The visit begins with the kitchen, which is actually a fireplace room, since it is the foyer from which, in the centre, we will follow the incredible leak in height of the ducts. We then pass in front of a room without much interest before reaching the chapel decorated with a beautiful wooden ceiling with geometric motifs, and painted with doves in different flight positions. Then a beautiful room, decorated in its center with a small pool and covered with green and black azulejos. Parallelepipedic pattern that gives a surprising kinetic effect. Superb coat of arms room with an octagonal wooden ceiling and painted with eight deer accompanied by the coats of arms of noble Portuguese families: along the wall run seven frescoes of hunting scenes in azulejos.
We will stop in the Pious Room: as many magpies were painted as there were ladies in the palace. King John I had been caught kissing one of them, and the answer he gave to the queen was "Por bem" ("for the good" or, more precisely, "in all good honor"), a motto that the magpies carry in their beaks. Finally, in the royal room, we will notice the ceiling of the swans, all of whom wear an inverted crown around their necks.
