MAC/CCB - MUSEU DE ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA
The most visited museum in Lisbon, hosting a permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and multiple animations.
In 2023, the Berardo Collection museum underwent a major change: it became MAC/CCB. There is no longer just one collection, but several: the Berardo Collection, the Teixeira de Freitas Collection and the Holma/Ellipse Collection. In addition to these collections, temporary exhibitions are organized.
In the case of the famous Berardo Collection, the Madeira-born billionaire who made his fortune in the South African mining industry collected an incredible number of works of art throughout his life. The exhibition features a permanent collection and holdings of over 862 works of fine art, mainly European and American from the 20th and 21st centuries (abstract art, surrealism, pop art...), most of which come from Joe Berardo's private collection (it took him twenty years to assemble these treasures). Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dalí, Roy Lichtenstein and Portuguese artist Paula Rego are all featured. The number of works is such that it will be possible to rotate between them, thus avoiding a permanent exhibition. Christie's has valued the ensemble at around 316 million euros, putting it on a par with the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London.
The Holma/Ellipse Collection comprises 860 works, assembled by João Oliveira Rendeiro (a famous Portuguese banker) and a capital fund. The collection was acquired by the Portuguese state at the end of 2022, and includes works by renowned contemporary artists, both national and international. They include Robert Wilson, Nan Goldin, Dan Graham, James Coleman, Raymond Pettibon, Fischli & Weiss, Stan Douglas, Douglas Gordon, Steve McQueen, Lourdes Castro, João Onofre, José Pedro Croft, Pedro Calapez, Pedro Cabrita Reis, João Pedro Vale and Julião Sarmento.
The Luiz Teixeira de Freitas Collection was created by the Brazilian collector of the same name, who has lived in Portugal for over thirty years. Luiz Augusto Teixeira de Freitas is a Brazilian lawyer who assembled his collection mainly between 2000 and 2014. It focuses on conceptual art, architecture, landscape, literature, ephemeral art and artists' books. Although it contains works by artists from all over the world, it gives pride of place to Portuguese and Brazilian artists.
