Practical information : Eating out Lisbon

TimetableTimetable

Traditional restaurants are rather open for lunch and dinner with a break in the middle. Here we do not eat too late and in general the kitchens close around 2pm for lunch and 10pm in the evening. Recently opened restaurants are often open continuously from 12pm to 10pm or even 11pm. Monday is THE closing day for most people. Fortunately, there are still a few establishments open that day. In August, most Portuguese go on holiday (they have little empathy for the tourists who come during this period) and you will find many establishments closed. It's sometimes a little frustrating

Budget & TipsBudget & Tips

To eat cheaply, you will have to go to small local restaurants where you can have lunch for about 15 € per person. Tapas-type restaurants, wine bars, international cuisine are often more expensive. With a drink, you will need to count between 20-30 € per person.

What costs extraWhat costs extra

In each restaurant, you will be charged for the meal, i.e. the bread often served with olives and cheese. If you don't touch it, you won't be counted. You can say from the beginning that you don't want it and it will be removed from the table. Tipping is not automatic in Portugal. But of course he is always welcome

The local wayThe local way

Even if this tends to disappear, there are still restaurants where on the menu it is mentioned "dose" and "1/2 dose". Unless you want to share the dish, we strongly advise you to take half a dose, otherwise you will end up with a giant portion

To be avoidedTo be avoided

Here we do not ask for a carafe of water in restaurants. You will be looked at strangely or a bottle of water will be brought directly to you (for a fee). In cafeterias, be aware that at the counter there are usually glasses and a carafe available for everyone

SmokersSmokers

The legislation is the same as in France, normally no smoking is allowed in restaurants

Tourist trapsTourist traps

In some places, such as the street that starts from the Maria II Theatre, there are tourist restaurants. They have a terrace or a nice view but the quality is not there, especially in relation to the price. They usually have reelers. Without being total scams, it's not really worth it.
