Everything about azulejos, from manufacturing techniques to different aesthetic trends.

Located in the cloister and outbuildings of the Madre de Deus convent, this museum traces the history and manufacturing techniques of the azulejo from the 15th century to the present day. This art, omnipresent in the decoration of the walls of Lisbon and Portugal, was exported to all the countries that were part of the Portuguese Empire. The history, the evolution of techniques and some of the most beautiful examples are presented and explained. The first room is dedicated to the evolution of techniques by showing examples. Then each room explains different styles and patterns. The Indian azulejos show different colours, while Dutch azulejos already evoke the comic strip by telling the story of religious characters. You will enjoy bringing the highlight of the show closer to the news; a gigantic 23-metre panel that represents a fascinating panoramic view of Lisbon before the earthquake. Everything is there, from the Madre de Deus to beyond Belem. As for the church of Madre de Deus, whose entrance is through the museum, it is also worth a visit. Equipped with a superb Manueline portal and precious Brazilian wooden floors, it is full of azulejos panels, carved wood, gilding, as well as Flemish and Portuguese paintings illustrating the life of Saint Francis. A pleasant cafeteria-restaurant allows you to have lunch on site in an amazing setting thanks to snacks or typical dishes at reasonable prices.
