The longest cable-stayed bridge in Europe withstands the 4.5 times more powerful earthquake and winds up to 250 km/h.

This cable-stayed bridge, the longest in Europe after the Crimean bridge, was designed to take account of the Earth's curvature and can withstand an earthquake 4.5 times more powerful than that of 1755 and winds of up to 250 km/h. Inaugurated just before the 1998 Universal Exhibition, after three years of construction work, it spans the Tagus d'Oriente to the south and the municipalities of Montijo and Alcochete. Designed by French engineer Jean Vassord, this seemingly endless motorway viaduct is 17.2 km long and almost 150 m above the Tagus.
