Monastery and church with a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the Alfama and offering tours.

It can be seen from afar with its huge white façade overlooking the Alfama. It is visible from the viewpoint Portas do Sol (beautiful at sunset). It was founded in 1147, as a tribute to the victory over the Moors and its church was built between 1582 and 1627. The monastery and the church of "Saint-Vincent-hors-les-murs" were initially located outside the Fernandine wall that surrounded the town. They are now an integral part of the city. The monumental church is impressive by the opulence of its interior decoration: wrought iron grills, floors in precious Brazilian wood, canopy as discreet as that of Saint Peter's in Rome. It's almost too much, the uneasiness... quickly follows the wonder. All this opulence for a place of worship, who would have thought! The cloister of the church is decorated with beautiful azulejos from the 18th century. They illustrate the fall of Lisbon at the hands of the Moors and, more curiously, La Fontaine's fables... (funny comparison). The old refectory has been transformed into a mausoleum housing the tombs of the Bragança dynasty, which ruled Portugal from 1640 to 1908. By taking the stairs of the tower, it is possible to reach a large terrace on the roof of the church from where the view extends in a panoramic way on the Alfama. What a great show! The church and cloister are not open for visits on Mondays. There is also a museum.
