A vast museum that retraces the long journey of the city through the different eras in its twenty rooms

A superb museum housed in a former orphanage, it traces Amsterdam's evolution through the ages and features typical historical objects set in reconstructed interiors. The temporary exhibitions are very well done. If you're short of time, you should at least cross the gallery linking the museum to the beguinage, which features (free of charge) huge portraits of civic guards' guilds, the most famous example of which is Rembrandt's masterpiece La Ronde de nuit in the Rijksmuseum.

Le musée mixe histoire d'Amsterdam et art parfois décalé à merveille. L'exposition sur le grafiti est très instructive et étonnante. Un musée à faire absolumment même avec des enfants
