Kokstad, the town of Kok, was born in 1862, when a group of 2,000 Griqua Métis led by Chief Adam Kok III made the journey from Philippolis in the Orange Free State to the slopes of Mount Currie. Ten years later, a minister persuaded the small colony to leave their sloping refuge and establish a town, Kokstad. If you take the Eastern Cape route, you can expect some stunning scenery. Wilderness adventurers are advised to take the R56 via Matatiele, Mount Fletcher, Maclear, Eliot, Lady Frere and Queenstown. You won't meet many strangers on this dizzyingly large altiplano.
