In 1838, after the Blood River victory, the Voortrekkers established the capital of the Republic of Natal here, which they named Pietermaritzburg, in tribute to the heroes of their cause, Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz. The British took control in 1843. Fort Napier was built and in 1845 Her Gracious Majesty's Governor Martin West was able to administer the entire British colony of Natal from here. Today, Pietermaritzburg has a small country town feel, with its many parks and historic buildings. People come here to stroll along the wide avenues and visit the interesting museums.
