Lao Cai is 340 km from Hanoi. It can be reached by car, bus (5 hr journey) or train. Travellers who have taken the night train from Hanoi disembark in Lao Cai in the early hours of the morning and travel to Sapa by bus (1h30 journey). In general, therefore, we don't spend the night in this border town, which is mainly frequented by Chinese traders. You can cross it to get to Sapa (30 km), Bac Ha (70 km) or, after completing the north-west loop, to catch the train to Hanoi. Frequent connections with Sapa by bus and minivan (allow an hour's journey).
