In the province of Yen Bai, with an area of 23,000 ha, this lake was formed in 1965 during the construction of a dam on the Chay River. The thousands of islets where the villages of the Dao ethnic group are nestled evoke a Halong Bay of the mountains. The site is known because the battle of Thu Vat took place there in 1285 during which the troops of Dai Viêt commanded by the general Trân Nhat Duât pushed back the Mongols. The region was also the scene of intense activity during the Indochina War, and later against the Americans. Thac Ba Lake is a stage that can easily be inserted in the framework of a circuit in the north.
