23 km south of Ourense, it is a small medieval jewel, next to the Arnoia river. It owes its name to Alaric, Swedish king in the 6th century. Capital of Galicia in the Middle Ages, this town of about 6,000 inhabitants is today part of the biosphere zone. Several museums are also worth visiting, such as those dedicated to local fashion and Galician toys. To get there by car from Ourense, take the A-52 motorway and then the N-525. By bus, the Monbus company provides connections from Ourense. The tourist office (www.allariz.gal) is located in Calle Alameda. It is open only in July and August, from 11am to 2pm and from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.
