Thirty kilometres west of Orense, Ribadavia takes refuge down the road. Erected on the banks of the river Miño, the former capital of the kingdom of Galicia has an old Jewish quarter that is among the best preserved in Europe; in the 15th century, Jews made up half the population of Ribadavia. The medieval layout of the town is dotted with Romanesque and Gothic churches, of which the San Xoan church, the oldest in the village, is worth a short stop. A few streets further on, the ethnological museum traces the daily life of the past. The small town is also famous for its white wine, the Ribeiro, a close relative of the Portuguese vinho verde.
