35 km east of Merida, the ancient Roman Metellinum is the birthplace of Hernán Cortés, one of the most famous conquistadores. His bronze statue, made by Eduardo Baron, stands in the Plaza Mayor. Overlooking the village, a 13th century castle (in ruins) offers a beautiful view of the banks of the Guadiana River. At the entrance to the village, the river is spanned by an old bridge from the 17th century that preserves several interesting Roman pillars. On the slope of the hill that crowns the castle, you will find the Roman theater inside an archaeological site dating back to the Bronze Age, next to the church of Santiago (13th century).
