Uclés is a small village of 219 inhabitants, located in the south of Alcarria and dominated by a beautiful fortified monastery of the Order of Santiago. It is known as the Escorial de La Mancha because its church resembles the one in Escorial, near Madrid. In 1174, this defensive building was chosen to house the headquarters of the Order of Santiago. Inside, the main staircase dates from the Renaissance and its decoration is Baroque. Part of the old wall from the end of the 11th century was destroyed to build the present monastery. And of this very important Muslim fortress, only three towers and a wall that unites them remain today.
