Zaafrane is a small town located 10 kilometers west of Douz. The city still lives at the rhythm of the migrations of the nomads of the region and knows a surcroît of activity in November. Until recently, one could still see the traditional goat hair tents typical of the region that served as dwellings for Bedouin nomads. This is no longer the case today. As is often the case in Tunisia, a new town has been built near the old one in recent decades: it is on the side of Zaafrane, the old , that we advise you to go for a walk. The inhabitants left the historical city about sixty years ago in favor of the new city. Don't let yourself be discouraged by the garbage that you will see on the road leading to it, it is really worth it. The old village is now abandoned and is almost completely covered with sand. The view of the ruins covered with small sand dunes and planted with wild palm trees is breathtaking. We recommend you to walk there at sunset: the light is extraordinary. The access to the site is not very easy, in the village ask for Zaafrane the ancient. If you are afraid of not getting there, don't hesitate to ask Sadok El Bey, the owner of El Bey Restaurant in Douz, to drive you there, it's one of his favorite places to walk!
