Tembaïne is a mountain located 120 kilometers south of Douz, three hours of sand track in 4x4, in the middle of the Grand Erg Oriental. Tembaïne has been occupied by men since prehistoric times. It is in fact two mountains with flattened tops that rise to 200 meters in the middle of the Sahara. From up there, the panorama on the dunes stretching as far as the eye can see is breathtaking. For the Bedouins, these two mountains are a crossroads, a landmark located 30 kilometers from Lake Houidhat Reched and its springs of water at 37 ° C. Tembaïne is planted in the national park of Jbil. With its 150 000 ha, this Saharan park is the largest national park in Tunisia. Composed mainly of rocks and small mountains ("jbil" in Berber), it is an area for the preservation and reintroduction of wildlife, including Addax gazelles and fennecs. At the entrance of the park of Jbil is a small museum rich in information on the fauna and the flora of the desert, it was completely abandoned at the time of our passage and it is a great shame. The (superbissimo) sand track between Douz and Tembaïne can be traversed only in 4x4, whose driving will be entrusted to a guide - except if one is a driver seasoned in the Sahara. On this road, you will cross three cafés, rustic and friendly, with palm straw roof and carpets on the ground, where it is good to refresh yourself.
