Located on the most eastern point of the East coast, Chebba (or La Chebba) is situated about sixty kilometers north of Sfax and about thirty kilometers south of Mahdia. The city has known a multitude of invasions during its history: Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines and Arabs. During the Roman period, it specialized in the olive oil trade. The 3,600 or so olive trees that still exist are mostly privately owned (225,000 trees grow here today). The ruins of their houses are in the middle of the olive fields. The central square of Chebba where the market is held, near the minaret, is slightly elevated. There are no remarkable restaurants in the village, but there are small places to eat on the go. The beach is a nice and quiet place. The locals appreciate this place and obviously want to keep it intact: the accommodation possibilities are slim. On the seafront, a unique café with its terrace allows to watch the youngsters playing soccer on the sand. 3 kilometers from the beach, the port is worth a visit, because the road leading to it is superb. It is guarded by an old tower that reminds us of the ideal defensive position of this end. Further south, by continuing the road of the sea front, one reaches the locality of Melloulèche.
