About fifteen kilometers south of Mahdia, there is a Roman site whose main attraction is the museum. Some parts of the walls and the remains of the baths have been excavated from the ancient Sullecthum. Nearby, the catacombs of Arch Zara. At the time when it was under Byzantine rule, Salakta was used as a strategic point for conquests; later on, as an important commercial port during the Second World War, it served as a military base for the French and as a defense base for the Germans. The city is also endowed with a pleasant beach with turquoise waters, unknown by tourists, but highly appreciated by Tunisians.
