Surrounded by mountains between 1,000 m and 1,500 m, Thala is located in the middle of a large semi-desert area through which the Le Kef-Kasserine road passes. Thala has had a rich and eventful history, with a human presence dating back to 50,000 B.C. Occupied by the Romans, the city then experienced a decline that lasted several centuries, it was destroyed and looted several times but rebuilt around the seventh century. Some marble quarries decorate the city today with an ochre color. Wednesday is the market day. Thala was the place of important demonstrations in the context of the Tunisian revolution in December 2010 and January 2011.
