Szolnok, at the confluence of the Tisza and Zagyva rivers, 100 km from Budapest, has 73,000 residents. The first inhabitants of the region were Scythians and Sarmatians (other Iranian nomads), followed by Asian Avars who were in turn driven out by the Huns, before Magyars came to settle there. Szolnok is also a spa town, well equipped for water sports, with hotels and campsites in Tiszaliget (a wood on the left bank of the Tisza). The former Franciscan church has a richly decorated pulpit. In recent years, a community of artists has settled near the ruins of the old castle. The area around the station is in pure socialist-realist style.
