Tata, a historic and very green town with 24 000 inhabitants, is surrounded by three lakes (Öreg-tó - the largest of the three, Cseke-tó, of smaller size, located in the north-east of the city centre and Által-éri-ülepítő, fishing lake in the east). Its pine forests make it a pleasant and peaceful resort in the shadow of its old Gothic castle (Öregvár), built in the th century. At that time, Tata was the city of Sigismund of Luxembourg (1368-1437), King of Hungary from 1387 to 1437, Germanic emperor from 1433 to 1437 and King of Bohemia from 1419 to 1437. It was he who, in the Council of Constance, allowed the Czech Reformer Jan Hus to condemn him. In the Renaissance, the royal Castle of Tata, 1409, was transformed, on the order of King Mátyás, into a magnificent Renaissance Palace. The palace that stands today dates back to the th century, and only a tower belonging to the original medieval building is still standing. A unique fortress in Hungary to be surrounded by water, the castle now houses a museum of ceramics.
