Located in north-east Queensland, Innisfail is the largest town on the Cassowary Coast (population: nearly 10,000). The town grew in the early 20th century thanks to the sugar industry: Art Deco buildings bear witness to this prosperous period. The town is famous for fruit picking, especially bananas and sugar cane from May to December. The Innisfail Budget Backpackers hostel is a good option for young people on working holiday visas who want to spend their days on the farm and have reasonably-priced accommodation. The Johnstone North, which flows down from the Atherton Plateau, is an excellent river for rafting and canoeing.
