270 km from Rockhampton, Emerald does not owe its name to the gemstone but to the Emeralds Downs breeding farm and its fertile emerald green lands. From the small town founded in 1879, very few old houses remain visible: it was unfortunately devastated by successive fires. Its most beautiful building remains the 1900 station, restored in 1986.The colossal water supply of Fairbarn Dam has made it possible to exploit the coal deposit in the Bowen Basin. Thanks to mechanization, the efficiency is excellent and Australia is one of the few countries where coal mining continues to grow.
