Located 90 km south-east of Melbourne, between Port Phillip Bay and Western Point Bay, the Mornington Peninsula is one of Melbournians' favorite holiday destinations. With its beaches, vineyards (more than 30, scattered throughout the region), green hills and magnificent views beyond Port Phillip Bay, Westernport and Bass Strait, it boasts some very good restaurants. On the ocean side, the shoreline offers a succession of basalt cliffs jutting out in sharp promontories, and small beaches battered by the wind and swell of Bass Strait. In October, don't miss the Main Street Mornington Festival (www.mainstreetfestival.com.au).
