Back on the Highway, you can discover the small town of Gympie, which means "devil" in the local Aboriginal language. It's also the name of a tree with nettle-like leaves. This town of around 20,000 souls is known as the town that saved Queensland from bankruptcy: in the 1860s, gold was discovered here, triggering a veritable gold rush. The mines continued to operate until 1920, saving Queensland from a severe economic depression. Backpackers can pick beans from March to December (www.australianworkingadventures.com).
