Hervey Bay is one of the few places on Queensland's south coast where you can't surf, as the waves are blocked by K'Gari Island. The town is best known as the departure point for the island (from River Heads, a ferry operated by SeaLink) and for whale-watching trips from July to early November. In fact, the town is considered the world's first Whale Heritage Site. A pleasant seaside resort, still peaceful and untouched by mass tourism, Hervey Bay also boasts numerous festivals throughout the year. And for lovers of water sports, there's the renowned Wet Side Water Park.
