To the south of Kalandra stands the hill of Vigla, crowned by what is believed to have been the citadel of ancient Mendi. It was a colony famous for its wine, which it stored in amphorae before exporting it to Greece and the rest of the ancient world. Mendi was destroyed by the Athenians during the Peloponnesian War, after abandoning the Athenian League in favour of the enemy, Sparta. Today you can walk up the hill of Mendi to see the ruins. Kalandra is a cute little village whose houses have retained elements of popular architecture. To the west lies the beautiful sandy beach of Posidi.
