This city was one of the most powerful in the region during the Mycenaean period. It even passes to be the oldest city of Greece. Its warriors took part in the siege of Thebes and in the Trojan war. Conquered by the Dorians, it remains at the head of a powerful confederation. At the time of the tyrant Phidon, it dominated the whole Peloponnese. In the VIth century, Sparta broke this hegemony and took away Cynuria, which remained for a long time an object of quarrel. Argos rises again in the5th century, crushing Mycènes and Tirynthe before joining forces against Sparta. Conquered by the Romans in 146 BC, Argos was then ravaged by the Goths, then integrated into the Byzantine Empire.
