Rize, 75 kilometers east of Trabzon, is a modern town built on a mountain slope covered with tea trees resembling green, plump pillows which, once dried according to a learned method, are exported to the four corners of the country. The tea garden of Riza is next to the factory of the Çaykur brand, a public monopoly in the exploitation of Turkish tea. More authentic than Trabzon, there is however less to see. Rize is a stopover on the way to the Kaçkar mountains or to Georgia. Note that the current president of the Turkish Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is a child of the country. One of the university campuses is named after him.
