88 km south of Trabzon. After Sumela, on the ancient trade route between Trabzon and Iran, founded in the Byzantine period, Gümüşhane was of considerable importance. The remains of this period remain near the new city. Churches are scattered here and there. The Greeks named it Argyrópolis(árguros: silver and pólis: city), the Turks took over the name and christened it Gümüşhane (the place of silver). In the heart of fruit and wild rose plantations, in a narrow valley, the town is a remarkable stop between Trabzon and Erzurum. Try the local rosehip syrup and jam.
