Foça is located on the site of ancient Phocaea, built between the 10th and 8th centuries BC by Greeks from the continent. Very early on, the Phocaeans, whose territory was small, turned to the sea and methodically explored strategic geographical areas, cultivable lands or lands rich in minerals all around the Mediterranean. Among the colonies founded by the Phocaeans, we find Attaleia in Corsica, Elea (Velia) in the south of Italy but also Avenio (Avignon) and the Phocaean city, Marseille. A 12th century Genoese castle reminds us of the prosperous period of Phocaea. Its wealth increased thanks to the development of its relations with the colonies created in the Mediterranean. In the 6th century B.C., Phocaea became the metropolis (the mother city) of Greek colonization in the western Mediterranean. The ancient village of Foça offers visitors its picturesque fishing port, its old houses with colors patinated by time, and its marble fountains. The seals that gave the village its name are rare but have been placed under government protection. Little invaded by tourism and delightful.
