Since 2014, the North Sinai area and in particular the city of Al Arich have been the scene of violent clashes between security forces and terrorist groups. The Egyptian army has banned access to the area and the French Foreign Ministry has also formally advised against it. The green vegetation and mineral yellow combined with the blue of the sea and the white walls of the villas give El-Arich a picturesque charm. Once an important fishing port and trading centre for the Bedouins, the oasis then became a residential tourism destination. Palm trees are sacred in this region and it is strictly forbidden to cut them down.
