Situated on the right bank of the Nile about twenty kilometres south of the city of Al-Minya, the small village of Beni Hassan contains a group of princely burials, built about 2,500 years before our era. It consists of thirty-nine tombs dug in the upper part of a dry rock. The relief and colour of this rock overlooking the Nile make it one of the most beautiful sites in Egypt. Nearby, the site of Antinoe, built on the site of Emperor Hadrian's lover, allows the observation of a group of princely tombs dating from the Middle Kingdom. The position of the city, at a bend in the Nile, is majestic here.
