Kilwa Kivinje was the German administrative centre for the south. In the 19th century, one of the major caravan routes (especially for slaves) from Lake Nyasa ended here. A dark episode in the history of Tanzania. More than 20,000 slaves passed through here each year. The Arab influence is clearly visible: carved doors, windows with wrought iron, worked balconies... It is today a small isolated but beautiful city. The remoteness of the region means that few people go there, while the charm of its large German colonial houses, close to the ocean, is intact, despite their dilapidation. The old Arab harem building still stands. The covered market is also attractive; it offers in particular fruits and fish.
