Kisiwani means island in Kiswahili. A 3 km strait separates this island from the mainland. A little over a thousand people live there today. Less than 500 tourists visit it each year, although its magnificent ruins are among the most spectacular on the East African coast. Before visiting the island, it is necessary to pay an entrance fee (27,000 TSH) to the Department of Antiquities located at the exit of Kilwa Masoko.
