A few kilometres south of Kilwa Kisiwani, the small island of Songo Mnara (the Songos are a coastal ethnic group, farmers and herders, and mnara means minaret in Swahili) has many complex ruins of stone houses and mosques, dating from the late Middle Ages. Three kilometres further south, the island of Sanje Majoma has large stone houses around beautiful courtyards with arcades. Finally, on the way back to Kilwa Masoko is the island of Sanje ya Kati, the settlement of the Shanga people, a powerful tribe that has now disappeared, but which resisted foreign invasions for a long time
