This island faces Mafia. For the record, in the 1820s, the village of Kua on the island of Juani was attacked by Sakalava cannibals who disembarked from Madagascar with 80 canoes, devouring many of the inhabitants and capturing the survivors for slavery. Today, the island is a little more welcoming, surrounded by a remarkable coral reef that is a delight for divers and turtles alike. Indeed, this is where they come to lay their eggs, although a current brings plastic bags from the coast. An excursion to see them in June and July is well worthwhile.
