Little-known to tourists, the small town of Ranong lies on Thailand's west coast, on the border with Myanmar (Burma). This provincial capital of around 17,000 inhabitants is separated from Myanmar by the estuary of the Chan River: the Pak Chan. The geographical location is called the "Isthmus of Kra": only 44 km separate this estuary from the Gulf of Thailand, making it the narrowest tongue of land in Thailand. Fishing is the region's main economic activity. Hat Chan Damri beach is 10 km from the town. The nearby hilltop offers a splendid panorama of the surrounding islands.
