Although 4 km further from Ranong, this island is more popular than Koh Chang thanks to its less rugged terrain. In the past, it was inhabited exclusively by the Chao Ley sea gypsies. Nowadays, several Farangs have settled here, and cashew nut and latex production has developed. However, the charm of the place is still there, and you can't really speak of a tourism "industry" here. In the rainy season, there are fewer volunteers to stay on the beaches, which are then very windy and swept by regular showers. Koh Phayam remains more accessible than Koh Chang at this time of year.
