This town of around 130,000 inhabitants, located 650 km south of Bangkok, is a focal point for boat transfers to Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Trains and long-distance buses stop here. Sleeping here before leaving for Koh Samui is not essential. The night markets along the river and in the center are lively. Near the Donsak Pier, the island of Koh Rat, linked to the mainland by a 400-metre bridge, is the smallest inhabited island in the country. It is home to a small fishing village of Chinese descent. There are also a number of temples in the vicinity worth a visit.
