The Chaiya district, an interesting stopover on the way south, has 3 main towns: Talat Chaiya, Phumriang and Lamet. Some 60 km north-west of Surat Thani, the village of Talat Chaiya is a relaxing option. All that remains of this historic site - Talat Chaiya was a city of the Srivijaya kingdom until the 10th century - is a peaceful village with a nostalgic charm. Today, the town boasts some attractive remains of ruined temples, notably the Srivijayan Wat Phra Kaew. The Chaiya National Museum, close to Wat Phra Borommathat, features exhibits from the historic era as well as contemporary local crafts.
