Population approx. 3,800. 50 km from Ljubljana. Archaeological excavations have established that an important Roman settlement, Municipium Praetorium Latobicorum, was located here. Its profitable location, however, did not allow it to develop to its full potential. Of the old castle, built around the year 1000, the surrounding walls, an arcaded courtyard and towers remain. The town is well worth a stop to visit its museum of naive art, with a remarkable range of paintings and sculptures. The town was the birthplace of Minka Govekar (1874-1950), a writer well known in the country for her ardent defense of the status of women.
